FASHION WEEK ROUNDUP: THE MILAN EDIT (PART 1)
To say the Italians raised the bar for SS18 at Milan Fashion Week would be an understatement; the collections were decedent, dramatic and without a doubt memorable. From a supermodel reunion on the Versace catwalk to the secret Dolce & Gabbana show, there was plenty to talk about during and after Milan Fashion Week, and as usual the Italian fashion houses did not disappoint.
The style on the streets of Milan was however a little more subdued, laid-back and casual; if you don’t already own a pair of vintage Levi jeans I would recommend you keep an eye out for a pair as they were a style staple here in Italy. As far as trends go, #AW17 is turning out to be a very ‘wearable’ season, taking style back to a few basic staples and then adding a few embellishments here and there.
THE MILAN EDIT: STREET STYLE
This season is all about nailing the basics; your style stapes will be a pair of mum jeans and a good cotton white t-shirt. From these basics you can create so many looks based on what you pair them with; layer over a checked blazer to achieve a more sophisticated look, pair with a chunky knit cardigan for the ultimate cosy day look or add a pop of colour with a printed waterfall coat.
PLAY WITH COLOUR
We saw at NYFW that the baker boy cap was making a comeback and style influencers have been getting more confident playing with this look; at MFW we saw pops of colour and more decedent details from D&G. The secret to really pulling off this look without looking like a throw back to the early 00’s is to keep everything else simple, think chic and not over the top.

BURGUNDY IS BACK
Burgundy is a classic Fall colour and it’s back again for another season. Spotted on the frow, the way to style this colour into your outfits is in the details; bags, shoes, accessories and if you’re feeling dramatic, a dark Burgundy lip colour.
Not traditionally associated with Autumn/Winter, florals are a statement print for this season. To avoid looking too Summery go for bold florals printed on darker backgrounds or red. Choose flowing fabrics, and pair with a statement sock or knife boot.

CRUSHED VELVET EVERYTHING
Velvet is everywhere this season, and has already hit the highsteet with a bang; it is going to be the texture of the season and I can see this being a very popular choice come Christmas party season and the New Year. There are no limits with what you can or can’t wear in velvet this season, it’s showing up every where from velvet blazers and cardigans to velvet track pants. Go for deep colours like midnight blue, green or Burgundy; alternatively dusty rose is also a popular colour choice for this trend too.
Another old trend that hints at a comeback this season after MFW is military detailing; think gold buttons and chain detailing, pocketed coats and structured shoulders. Again, the key to nailing this trend is to keep things simple and focus on incorporating it into one piece of your outfit. Understated and chic is always better than over the top with a trend like this.
