This time last year I rounded up my favourite products from the year across a range of categories; some of those products have remained on the top of my list through 2016, some have been replaced and others have come along to add something new.
So, with another year behind me I decided once again to round up the best products that 2016 had to offer and what better place to start than with beauty?
This year, thanks to the wonderful team at Estée Lauder Travel Retail, I got to try some amazing products and brands that I never had before, and because of this 2016 be came a year of great exploration in regards to beauty; I have tried out and tested a lot of different beauty products in the past 12 months and have been pleasantly surprised by how much the quality of ‘drugstore’ make-up has stepped up.
While I have invested in some more ‘high-end’ make up products as well this year, when it came to choosing the best of 2016’s beauty products I went with ones that I find myself reaching for on a daily bases and not having to think to much about application; so here they are, the best of beauty 2016.
Best Foundation: L’oreal Paris True Match Foundation
For a ‘drugstore’ foundation I was really impressed with the huge selection of shades that L’oreal offer in the foundation; even within shades they offer cool and warm tones which means their really is the perfect shade for everyone.
This foundation applies smoothly and blends beautifully, lasting all day without feeling heavy on the skin.
I can’t count how many different concealers I’ve gone through this year, or how many that I tested that didn’t even make it into my basket; but when I came to choosing my favourite, the first one that came to mind was Maybelline’s Age Rewind Concealer.
I loved the ease of application with this concealer, and the soft puff on the top means there is no drag or tug of the sensitive skin under the eyes. This concealer is great for brightening dark circle, doesn’t feel heavy on and looks great all day.
Best Concealer: Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer
Best Finishing Powder: Rimmel Stay Matte Powder.
Rimmel’s Stay Matte finishing powder is a cult favourite among beauty bloggers, but something that I myself had not tried until this year; it doesn’t take long to understand why beauty enthusiasts alike keep repurchasing this powder: it’s extremely affordable, light wearing and keeps your face in place!
I use the shade 001 Transparent and love that I can apply it with both a dusting brush or beauty blender. I’m not a huge fan of ‘mattifying’ products, but this powder doesn’t dry out my skin even though it stops excess shine developing through the day.
Finding a bronzer that suits pale skin is no easy task, that’s why I was so happy when I received the limited edition Clinique Kiss by the Sun Palette at the beginning of the Summer. This palette included two eye and lip colours as well as Clinique’s gorgeous True Bronze Pressed Powder Bronzer in the shade Sunkissed; Sunkissed is the perfect shade bronzer for pale skin, a subtle yet buildable glow.
Best Bronzer: Clinique True Bronze
Best Highlighter: Make-Up Revolution London
This gorgeous Make-Up Revolution Highlighting Palette didn’t come into my life until the end of 2016, but when it did if took my glow game to a whole new level.
With three different illuminating shades, this palette creates the perfect highlight that can be as subtle or dramatic as you fancy; the finely milled pressed powders apply and blend beautifully creating that glow from the inside out look, and it’s only £8.
Over the years I have bought and been disappointed by so many gold eyeshadows; they either are too glittery, not metallic enough or have poor colour pay-off. Not L’oreal’s Color Riche Eyeshadow Mono in the shade Gold Mania, this beautiful powder eyeshadow packs a serious shimmer punch that is right on point every time!
This shadow applies so easily I have often thrown it in my handbag and applied it using my finger tips on the train to give my make-up a freshen up for an after work event.
Best Eyeshadow: L’oreal Paris Color Riche
Best Mascara: Benefit Roller Lash
Benefit’s Roller Lash comes out on top in the mascara department for the second year; I keep coming back to this mascara again and again, and while I have found some more affordable dupes this year (like the Maybelline Falsies Push Up Drama Mascara), I still pick Roller Lash over everything else.
This mascara gives a great curl, the brush helps separate the lashes making them appear longer and voluminous.
Liquid liner is something we all love, yet all hate applying; when it goes well it looks amazing but when it goes wrong it can ruin your whole day!
This year Maybelline’s Master Ink Matte liquid liner has been a winner for me; I love the matte finish and how sleek and easily this liner applies. I also love that once this liner dries, it doesn’t budge; one of my pet peeves is when liquid liner fades or transfers onto my brow bone, but this liner stands the test of time, even on hot Summer days.
Best Eyeliner: Maybelline Master Ink
Best Lipstick: Revlon Matte Lipstick
If you know me at all then you’ll know that of all make-up/beauty products, lipstick is my number one obsession; my lipstick collection is forever expanding and choosing a favourite from a whole year of lip moments, you would think would be a difficult task but in fact it was the easiest choice of all.
While I have invested in and received some gorgeous lip colours through this year, when I thought about which lipstick has been used more than any others in the past 12 months, Revlon’s Matte Lipstick in the shade Smoked Peach comes out on top; this lipstick has lived in my handbag most of the year and is my go-to no-effort lip colour. This nude peach colour is the perfect match for my skin tone and the lipstick that I makes me so happy every time I apply it!
